Climbing Trail

Careful on these pathways. The loose rocks and steep hills could end in a very early demise.

Kaili - 10-10-2011 at 04:19 PM

The homecoming dance had been a complete and total waste of time. Not that she didn’t think it would be. She had gone in with the idea that she would be bored out of her head for an hour of two and then she and Jude would dip out early to do something that actually interested them. And that was exactly what had happened. It had been just a little harder than expected, what with his uncle watching their every move, as if Kaili would stab Jude given the opportunity, but of course, that was the furthest thing from the truth...She wanted to be alone with him for...different reasons.

After her mini breakdown in gym class, they had been pretty much together every possible chance they got. Jude had been her rock through this whole transition and in return Kaili would sneak him around the Shore as best she could. She knew how against it his uncle was and...well, that only made her want to do it more. She didn’t like Mauli. First of all, he was KPD. He did nothing but make it harder for her brother and her father to do their jobs. And secondly, he had an irrational hate for his own people. She didn’t know what had crawled up his ass but it had died and it seemed to be stuck. The complete opposite could be said for her father.

She remembered asking him if she could go to this dance, sure that he would say absolutely not to her going outside of the Shore by herself after dark, but she had been wrong. As soon as he learned that Jude was her “escort” for the night, she had been given every blessing the Gods could bestow. Even her outfit, with shorts that usually would have caused a problem, was only criticized by her brother; complaints that were quickly quieted by Alemana. Strange wasn’t the word for it...but she wasn’t about to look a gift horse in the mouth...because it meant she could spend the night with Jude...Which is how they ended up here, hiking the trails of Nui Mu appreciating the incredible stupidity of everyone that existed outside South Shore.

“...And what were they even fighting over? Probably some girl that’s just going to play them both in the end-,” she laughed a little, knowing the type and figuring just how love triangles like that end. Tragically.

Jude - 11-10-2011 at 11:36 AM

Walking with Kaili, the dusk setting so quickly into night that it was almost like ink covering the Shore, Jude listened quietly. Not really anything specific, though. He just listened. Listened to the rolling waves, dashing against the cliffs underneath them, meeting the black sand of the nearby beach. He listened to the night sounds as everything sounded so much more...clearer. Like there was nothing but nature out there. Crickets chirping slowly in the humid night air, the soft hoots of owls hidden in the tall trees lining the path, the crackle of snapping twigs and sun-dried leaves in the still night. And he listened to her voice, winding around all of the sounds, blending like it just belonged there. Most of the time they'd walked, he hadn't even known what Kaili was talking about. He'd just kind of nodded and kept up with her sure stride and commented on the parts that he did catch. But mostly, he just listened. He liked listening. Even though it reminded him that he wasn't alone anymore, he liked to hear her speak...because it reminded him of just that. He wasn't alone anymore. Was that twisted? Yeah, kind of...

"The hell if I know what any of that was about..." He admitted, listening to Kaili talk about the fight that they'd seen at Homecoming. Well...one of the fights, considering there were probably a few after he and Kaili had escap-er...left, homecoming. He really should've just called it what it was. Escaping. Mauli had been chaperoning from the second he found out that Jude was going to a school event and much less, with "that Shore girl" in tow. What was odd was that Unc Li' hadn't even banned him from going. He hadn't asked how he was keeping contact with Kaili and he didn't even seem to care...until Jude found out he was chaperoning. The entire night was one being fucking nerve as he and Kaili had made plans to leave early and spend the night on the Shore...just hanging out, of course. Plans had almost been ruined, no thanks to Mauli, but they were there...together.

"I'm just glad breaking up fights gave Unc' something else to do. He was staring at us so hard, I thought he'd pop a vein or something..." Chuckling, he took a careful step over a unearthed root and caught up with Kaili. Some times, he couldn't help but be jealous of how easy it was for her to walk the land beneath her feet on the Shore. Even in the dark, she wasn't paying much attention to her footing. But Jude couldn't help but look down, his eyes straining to see what he was walking on or over in the quickly falling dark.

"Thanks for helping me get out of there." It'd basically been her doing, pushing past people so fast that they made it back to the front of the stuffy ass country club in no time. And then, they'd pushed his bike about a half mile up the road, her arms brushing against his as they shuffled in the dimming light. She'd thought it was better to start his bike out of earshot. Pretty smart. With a smile, he looked down at her as she walked beside him, his eyes roaming a little bit farther down than he'd meant them to. Quickly, he looked back to the path...

Kaili - 11-10-2011 at 02:11 PM

Was she talking too much? She always had to catch herself with Jude, worried that her word vomit would be a turn-off, but not wanting to let a silence linger too long to become awkward. It wasn’t as if either of them really cared what was going on with the drama of AJW, but what else could she talk about? Lore. Duh. She was running short on things to tell him though...Not that she was out of ‘lore. No, far from it. She had stories about her people that could fill a library of encyclopedias, but...Jude couldn’t know them all. By the Gods, the stupid rules were starting to irk her nerves. Jude was...close enough to being Moku. He was local and he wanted to learn, despite his white-washed uncle...Wow...She never thought she’d ever be the one making a case for an outsider’s acceptance. Ever. But Jude was...different. He felt different. Sure he wasn’t from the Shore, but he felt like...home. She couldn’t explain it and she really didn’t care to try. All she knew was that Jude belonged. Despite what everyone else was saying, the Shore was his home. She could see it in his eyes.

Well not as well now, his ocher eyes only dimly lit in the quickly falling dark that surrounded them as he commented on his uncle and their great escape. Which had been great by the way. Honestly, she couldn’t remember ever being able to sneak and do anything, what with her father being the supreme authority. The only person with guts enough to even think of going along with Kaili for something she knew she had no business doing was Ailani; which was why they had been friends for so long. But that was a conversation for another time.

“It’s not like there was nothing in it for me-,” she said, a smile on her lips as they kept up the trail. She really wanted him to see the Shore from the top. Well, not necessarily the 'top', but Nui Mu plateaued a little not too far from where they were. It gave the most breathtaking view of most of South Shore. It was the one thing they hadn’t done together and she knew he’d enjoy it. Only she hadn’t thought about how rocky the terrain was on the trail. Tripping was becoming an issue for her so she knew Jude was probably having a little trouble. And it was only going to get worse the higher they got...but it was worth it.

“I promise all this work is worth it. The view at the top is amazing.”

Jude - 11-10-2011 at 03:24 PM

Never, and Jude meant never, did he think that he'd ever find someone that hated the side of the island he called "home" outside of himself. Everyone around him, including his Uncle, seemed so damn blind to it all. They didn't see just how completely, deluded they all were. So happy with their existence in a world that wasn't even theirs to begin with. Nothing about his life was real and his Uncle supported it all, only returning to the Shore to make it some replica of the other side of the island. His Uncle, in Jude's eyes, was just as bad as the locals that didn't even care enough to see what their roots were. And Mauli knew his roots. He knew them first hand. He'd grown up on sacred land and went to the same school that Kaili had gone to before she'd been shipped off to AJW. Yet, he ran away? What type of common sense did that make? At least Jude knew better. And at least he had someone like Kaili who could teach him better. He would always be grateful to her for that...for making the Shore feel more like "home" than home ever would.

Smiling at her words, he looked at her again, silently hoping that she hadn't seen his eyes linger a moment ago. He didn't mean to...look at her like that. It was just...it was the first time that he was seeing her...after the sun fell. The sunlight wasn't bronzing her skin anymore, but the moon...the moon made it glow. It just caught his eyes, that's all. The way that it gleamed in the blue of the moon's light, her hair standing out against the new paleness of her normally tanned complexion. And when the light of the moon left and all went dark, the browned skin stood out, like it was back lit. The colors were kind of...striking. And that made him want to watch. Of course, the jean shorts that she wore, that Jude was sure Keahi probably had something to say about kinda...made him want to watch even more...

Smirking at his own stupid thoughts, he nodded silently at her promise of an amazing view as soon as they'd gotten done climbing. Jude was climbing a fucking volcano. How cool was that? Nui Mu. The big inactive. And the fact that she was climbing with him...and she wasn't afraid was even cooler. Stepping quickly, but carefully on the slight incline as they continued up the trail, he tried his best to keep up with Kaili even though his boots weren't making it any easier. When Kaili had told him of their plans that evening, he should've grabbed Mauli's hiking boots, but that would've been too conspicuous. It was okay though. He was making it...and practically holding his breath in hopes that he didn't make one wrong step and topple over the side of the sharp edged path.

"I bet the view is pretty awesome. I- thanks. For bringing me, I mean." He spoke, listening to the gravel crunching under their feet.

Kaili - 11-10-2011 at 07:11 PM

It hadn’t started that way. She had been fascinated with the other side of Kapuhai Reef before she started having to go everyday. Up until pretty recently, she would beg her father for any chance she could to get out of South Shore; to explore. She was just curious to see how the other half lived, how people like her dealt with being on a part of the island where who they were didn’t matter. In a way, they had a freedom she didn’t have and she thought she wanted to taste that. She had been wrong. Completely wrong. Now a days, going to that side for training was beginning to be stressful. After days at AJW she wanted nothing more than to return to the place where she really belonged...and if she could, ring Jude with her. Kaili honestly couldn’t figure out how he stayed. She had only been commuting for a few months and she was about to go apeshit insane.

Jude was a different kind of man though. He was...stronger than she was. And not in the traditional sense of physical strength--not that he didn’t have that going for him too, but he was mentally strong. He had been through so much, with losing his parents and having to live a life he really knew nothing about...but he was still going. He was still living the best way he knew how, hell, he was even helping her adapt. Jude was...a lot more of a man than anyone in his life really gave him credit for. And she admired him for that. More than that, she respected him for it and on a whole other level...she found it attractive. What girl wouldn’t? Jude was cute, he was sweet, and from the one night that he’d challenged Keahi, she could tell he was more than capable of handling himself. Of course she liked him.

It was obvious to her family it seemed. Hoku was forever teasing her about it and Keahi liked to pretend he didn’t care, but Kaili could tell in the way his jaw tightened that he didn’t like her wanting to be with Jude...He probably preferred Nui. Wrong. He obviously preferred Nui, but that shit wasn’t going to happen. Ever. Jude was more than twice the man Nui would ever be and she knew that for a fact. She had heard the rumors girls spread around Kahealani and they weren’t pretty. And what was worse, they were true. Nui disputed not one of them and it was completely scandalous. Jude on the other hand had yet to do anything outside the realm of respect. He hadn’t made not one move on her and she couldn’t say she wasn’t disappointed. She thought she had read all the signals right but maybe her feelings were one sided. Maybe he just wasn’t into her the way she was into him. And that was cool. They could still be friends and they could still take their trips to the Shore...couldn’t say she wouldn’t be disappointed though.

Jude spoke as Kaili noticed an unearthed tree root just in time to step over it. Fuck. She loved her home, but the land was ever fucking changing. How the Pueo navigated this every night was beyond her, honestly. “Jude, really-,” she said softly, still moving up the trail, “You don’t have to thank me for bringing you...-,” she paused, not sure if she wanted to end it with the word she had been thinking. He wasn’t born and raised in the South Shore, but his roots were here. His lineage began right here same as hers did. When Kaili brought him to the Shore, she always felt like she was bringing him...

...home.

Jude - 12-10-2011 at 11:10 AM

Home. Kaili's lips uttering that word made Jude's steps slow along the path that they walked...and then stop completely. Jude was...home. He'd always felt that way whenever he walked the land of the South Shore. Whenever he rode his bike along the old, paved roads, breathing in the ocean air as it whipped past his face and through his hair. He felt it in every bone, every fiber of his body, even before he knew it was his to feel. Even before Kaili had shown him all the amazing things that his Uncle had deprived him of by keeping him away from it. And for what? Why? Why would the only place that Jude felt like he was "normal" be something that he could not have? That was taken away from him without an explanation or reason? He belonged there. He belonged as much as any other person with Moku blood running through their veins and now, he knew it to be true. He didn't have to feel completely stupid when he thought thoughts of...actually belonging somewhere. Of not being completely alone and misunderstood. Of not being the weirdo that was so out of touch with everything around him because none of it felt real.

There weren't any words to say as he stood there, looking at Kaili. She'd just said something that he had wanted to hear his entire life. And so far, no one had answered that want. Not Unc' Li, definitely not him. All Jude got from his uncle were warnings and...more warnings. But never anything of any value about who they were and what they were. Just going back to the Shore, holed up in that fucking police station? Trapped in his room while his Uncle patrolled the only place he wanted to be? That did nothing for Jude. But Kaili had done everything for him. Just in those few words. It those words were more truth than anything his Uncle, Nui, Keahi...anyone could ever say to him. None of them would ever make him think any differently.

"Yeah I do...have to thank you." He muttered, his lips curving into a smile as he looked away from her, his words embarrassing him, even as he said them. Ruffling his hair nervously, he stared at his boots, nearly hearing himself gulp from what he was about to say. "I- no one has ever cared about what I wanted...not like this. Not like you. So, yeah...I kinda do...want to thank you." Silence fell so quickly after his words that he'd thought that he hadn't even spoken at all. Hesitantly he looked up at Kaili and smiled again.

"And...I fuckin' embarrassed myself." With a short chuckle, he stuffed his hands in his pockets, catching up to where Kaili stood.

Kaili - 12-10-2011 at 12:16 PM

She had tried to say in conversationally. She kept moving after her pause until she noticed Jude was no longer right behind her. She didn’t need to ask whether or not it was something she said. She knew it was. She’d told Jude that the South Shore was his home, only...she hadn’t expected it to be that...deep for him. When she noticed his feet had stopped hers did as well. They were a few feet apart, illuminated only by the moonlight falling through a gap in the overhanging foliage, and the look on his face said more than words ever could. His eyes seemed to stare directly into hers and his mouth hung slightly open, slack with what she assumed was...she didn’t know. Kaili could read the expression his face held and it kind of made her nervous. Was he okay with her saying that? She couldn’t see why he wouldn’t be. If anyone hated the other side more than Kaili, it was Jude...

She felt her cheeks grow hot as she allowed the silence to continue, not sure of how to break it, or whether or not she even should. Somehow she figured a ‘what’ would be redundant. She knew ‘what’. She just didn’t know exactly how he was taking it at the moment...Jude saved her the trouble of wondering for too much longer though, finally speaking, telling her that he did, in fact, have to thank her. He really didn’t. She liked him being here, she had fun when they did things like this together...she had a lot of fun when they were together, period. Of course, she could never tell him that. Not before she was sure she wouldn’t look like a complete ass throwing herself at him, anyway. No, she couldn’t say what was on her mind, so she would say nothing.

She exhaled a little as his eyes finally looked away from her. And his next words were enough to bring a smile to her lips. No one has ever cared...not like this...not like you. She couldn’t dispute his thanks this time. It would have been disrespectful and what’s worse, it would have cheapened the moment. In all honestly, Kaili never knew that his trip to the Shore meant that much to him. After they were caught at the Falls, she hadn’t known what to think. In the times they’d come here together since, she could see that he liked it here but...For the second time since the start of their friendship, the urge to hug him overtook her and it won out; not that there was any opposition.

As he stepped closer to her, telling her how embarrassed he was over his confession, her arms fell around his torso as her head laid against his broad chest. This didn’t need words. Words wouldn’t do it justice.

Jude - 12-10-2011 at 01:48 PM

Whatever had crawled into Jude's head and fucked up his brain that night was really getting the best of him. He nearly kicked himself...hard...right in his own shin from the dumbness that he'd just said. The things that he'd just told Kaili. He didn't mean to just blurt that all out and make her as uncomfortable as he was sure she felt, just...staring at him the way she was. But, he didn't want her to think he thanked her out of habit or...that his "thanks" weren't sincere. Because they were. Every one of them. He was beyond grateful for her. Taking some quiet, haole loner kid around an island that she already knew. Wasting her time with him when she could've been out with friends, which Jude was sure she had. She was too...nice. Yeah right...nice. Way too nice to not have friends. Instead, she stayed with him. Riding around her island on the back of his bike and she never complained once. If he was stupid, he would've said she actually enjoyed it all. Either way, she was a saint for that. And he couldn't avoid telling her that. He'd waited too long to do that in the first place.

With his hands deep in his pockets, he waited for her to agree with his embarrassment. Or that he was completely dramatic. He expected her to do anything outside of what she did do. Her arms looped through the space between his body and his arms and around his back, hugging him. Hugging him? His mouth moved wordlessly as his eyes met the top of her head. But there was nothing too say. Somehow, through all of the things he'd told her, he'd deserved...a hug. He'd deserved her body pressing against his, so firmly...almost like he'd said or done...something right. Smiling a little as the shock of having her so close to him settled over him, he pulled his hands from his pocket and hesitantly wrapped his arms around her shoulders, returning her embrace.

It felt so foreign to him, having her there, in his arms. He didn't know...what to do. Hugs weren't a common commodity in his home...or in his life. He couldn't remember the first hug he'd received. Maybe...it was hers? Maybe it was Kaili's? In that deserted classroom after he'd saved her from the detention that she still ended up facing in the end. A detention that he purposefully shared, having told his Geometry teacher to go "fuck himself, sideways". All the same, his second hug...felt more awkward than the first. But just like the first, it was warm and it sent...heat all over him. Shifting a bit, he looked down a Kaili, her face pressed against his chest and he...felt like something...swelled inside of him. Like...something was growing or...moving faster. His heart. It thudded against his ribs so hard...so quickly. He was sure she felt it, her face pressed against where it beat. Inhaling deeply, he caught his breath, that change in him was overwhelming. Scary. Almost...exciting. Too exciting. He couldn't...breathe.

"Kaili..." He whispered, pushing her a bit from him, a small space forming between them. At the sound of her name, she looked up at him, her dark green eyes searching his, confused at his sudden distance. His hand went to her cheek...he still couldn't breathe. Touching her there, his fingertips caressed her skin as he lowered his head, his lips hovering over hers as he closed his eyes and then...exhaled. Softly, his lips met hers...sort of.

"Yeah..." He said, drawing away from her, a small laugh escaping him. "I'm pretty sure I just kissed your nose..."

Kaili - 12-10-2011 at 03:22 PM

There was no need for him to be embarrassed! He was grateful for all that she had done for him which, if you were to ask Kaili, was nothing...but it was sweet. He was sweet. Jude honestly didn’t give himself enough credit. He was really a good guy most of the time and when she got past that loner exterior, she found out that he was actually great. Kaili enjoyed every second of the time they spent together, even the awkward hug moments like this one. Yes, she would admit that it was completely awkward, but to be fair he’d made it so there was nothing she could say to him. She wasn’t good at verbal expression, she never had been. She was a lot more into showing people how she felt than telling them and she’d proven that with that ridiculous bitch from her gym class and again soon after that with yet another...hug...By the Gods she had to stop doing this.

But just as she was about to pull away, his hands left his pockets wrapping around her shoulders as he held her body close to his. The goofy smile on her face faded a bit as she realized, he was hugging her back. Understand, Kaili had hugged plenty of people. But almost never boys and NEVER a boy she actually liked. This was different for her...new. And she liked it. She liked that it was Jude and she liked that they were alone while it was happening. Feeling an unfamiliar tingle rise in her skin, she held a little tighter. A part of her was sure she probably should have done the opposite and let him go, but another part of her, a bigger part...never wanted this moment to end. Jude apparently thought differently.

Her brows knitted together in confusion as she looked up at him. Fuck. She knew she should have let go. She knew she should’ve just...All of her thoughts came to a screeching halt as his hand found her face, his fingertips lightly resting on her cheek, causing her heart to pause and her breathing to hitch. Was he doing what she thought he was about to do?! Kaili slowly rose to her toes as Jude head drifted closer and closer to hers. For what seemed like an eternity, he hovered, his lips painfully close to hers in a silent tease before it finally happened...sort of.

She couldn’t help the small giggle that escaped her lips as his kind of brushed her nose before he pulled away. He spoke before she did, a laugh escaping him as well. “Yeah, you did a little-,” she said softly, her voice weak from what had almost happened...That had almost been her first kiss. She smiled at the thought, her already reddening cheeks growing hotter. Her first kiss with Jude Kane...It would have been perfect...It still could be.

“We could um...-,” she paused, returning her body to his as she pulled one of her arms from his waist so that she could pull his head back to hers, her hand pulling gently on the back of his neck, “We could try again-,” with a small smile she pulled his lips to hers, closing her eyes as she just...kept the moment.

Jude - 12-10-2011 at 04:30 PM

Smooth. Totally smooth, actually as Jude was the smoothest of the smooth. That should have been known as he just flubbed up a move that was completely too...cool for him to have even attempted. What was he doing? Out in the middle of the falling darkness, on the Shore...kissing a Shore girl. God, he wanted death. But Kaili wasn't just any Shore girl. She was...different. What that different meant, he couldn't really say right now. But it was just "different" enough for him to actually try and kiss her. Well...kiss her nose. That was kind of...the same thing, right? Uh, no. Not by a long shot. And Kaili probably realized that too, her giggle mingling with his nervous laughter. He'd totally messed up something that would've come a lot easier for...someone less...loner maybe? Less antisocial enough to have actually kissed someone before. And by now, Kaili probably knew that his loner had extended all the way into his displays of affection, making them as null as his friend count. None of that had really mattered...before Kaili...and her hugs.

Watching her face in the scant moonlight shining through the over brush, his arms left her shoulders, one dropping to his side, the other ruffling his hair, which made his attempt to play off the horrible kiss that he'd just given Kaili pretty damn noticeable. He looked away at her words, a smirk on his lips, hoping that she couldn't see the embarrassment he wore. That was becoming his entire night. A shit load of embarrassing moments culminating together because of his bright idea to try something different. His amazing efforts to try and actually...extend outside of himself enough to not drive everyone around him away. He didn't have a reason to drive Kaili away. More than anything, he wanted her...closer. And that made him nervous. Jude never wanted anything or anyone close enough to truly get where Kaili was now. In his space, her arm around his waist, chest pressed against his. And for once, he didn't get the desire to push away and run. He wanted to stay...

And she...wanted to try again? Kaili's hand was at the back of his neck, pulling his face closer to hers, her fingers tangling in his hair as her eyes closed again. This time, he didn't close his eyes as he lowered himself to her face, his nose touching hers. His eyes took her in. Her parting lips, the blush in her cheeks that the moonlight finally caught. Her eagerness to touch his lips again. He hesitated, though, letting his hands go to her hips, lightly. Still watching her, he lowered his lips to hers, pressing them there, so gently, against hers. His hands tightened against her hips, pulling her into him as they finished the kiss, lowering his head again to start another.

You enjoying yourself, fucker...? Nearly throwing himself away from Kaili, the voice from the shadows nearly caused Jude's already beating heart to nearly give out from surprise. Turning towards it, he expected to see Keahi charging towards him with murder in his eyes. Instead, there stood tall, annoying Nui...shirtless and a machete in hand. Fucking great.

Kaili - 12-10-2011 at 05:29 PM

This was really happening! Jude was giving her her first kiss and, right here, on the trails of Nui Mu, she was absolutely falling for him. Even after their failed attempt at it the first time, the second kiss was...perfect. She shivered a little beneath his touch, his hands at her hips as his lips pressed against hers ever so gently. Quietly, she whimpered in pure, unadulterated pleasure. She felt lightheaded, as if she was getting some type of high from just his touch and as his hold on her hips tightened she decided they might not make it up the rest of the trail tonight. She was more than enjoying herself in this very spot...with him. Butt as one kiss finished and another was about to begin, a voice that belonged to neither Jude nor Kaili sliced through the darkness.

Jude was at least arms length away from her before she was sure who had even spoken, but as she squinted into the dark the familiar figure became more than clear to her. UGH!! Why was it always him?! Why was he always there to ruin things when they were going so well for her?! She hated him so much right now. HATED HIM. What had been a completely beautiful night was already headed south just by him speaking and she was positive, neither she nor Nui would leave the trails happy. She was already pissed, an aggravated sigh leaving her lips as she stepped closer to Nui, allowing Jude to fall behind her should he get any ideas. Nui had already caught she and Jude together once and that hadn’t ended well. There was no reason this should be any different.

“We are actually-,” she responded to his question, her tone one of challenge, “Or at least we were before you came along. Why are you here Nui?” She could have guessed why. It was well after sunset and he was probably on duty. And it was just her luck that he was patrolling in the one area she and Jude found themselves in that night. Great. Just fucking awesome. She wasn’t sure how he would answer with Jude standing there. To him, the Pueo was an owl from legend, to Nui, it was a way of life...She’d save him the trouble.

“No, you know what? I don’t care. Can you just take it somewhere else please-,” attitude dripped off of her every word and she was sure it showed in her face as well. She wanted nothing more than for Nui to disappear and if he knew what was good for him, he would want the same thing.

Nui - 13-10-2011 at 10:37 AM

Wasn't this mother fucking adorable. Just what Nui wanted to see that night. Kaili, his best friend's little sister, on the Nui Mu trails, playing fucking tonsil hockey with a goddamned haole. If it wasn't enough that he HAD to do patrol that night, even after he'd asked Keahi for the night off! Yeah, so what if Pueo meant "no time off until you start a family". Those rules didn't usually apply to Nui. He slacked off, did what he wanted, when he wanted. But, tonight the rules stuck for everyone. Nui didn't give a shit if the tribe needed every able body on duty that night. So what? FOR what? The hell if he was just going to answer the "call of the Elders". Especially when they always skimped on the details. He other plans. And those other plans involved being seven-inches deep in Hekili's baby sister. Sexy little thing... She was hot. Even for a sixteen year old. Nui'd been watching her for awhile. Almost as long as he'd been watching Kaili. But Kaili was another story. Anyway, Hekili had been being such the little bitch about things lately, especially since he'd caught Nui on their family's living room couch with his fingers...well, let's just say that his sister could take two...easy. So sorry if Nui exposed that future porn star as the slut that she was, but he'd enjoyed every moment of it...especially her moans. Party wasn't over either as Nui was supposed to see her tonight and finish what he'd started. But no. He was here, watching Kaili's little shit boytoy nearly crap himself as his eyes honed in on Nui's machete. For good measure, Nui sneered at the kid, tapping the long blade against his thigh.

Gritting his teeth, his menacing sneer melted from his face as Kaili stepped between he and that...Nui had to pull back on the anger he was feeling that moment, sure that he would charge right through Kaili just to get to that fucking bottom grubber. Two reasons. There were TWO REASONS why Nui hated Kaili's Haole bitch. One, he wasn't one of THEM. He wasn't Akame and he sure as shit wasn't Moku. Fuck if his blood said it. He was tainted. Nui could tell that from the paler hue of his skin, his foreign tongue, his ignorance. Why couldn't the foreigners just stick to their own side? TWO, and this was a big one, the haole fucker HAD to chose Kaili to spend his time with. Why her?! Why couldn't haoles just stick to their own? And why the hell did Kaili want...him!? Nui had been working on her for years. Flirting with her, she sniping back at him...but he was wearing her down. Or so he thought. Now, after seeing her lip-locked with this weak fuck, Nui wasn't so sure.

"You know what I'm doing here Kai-" With an amused smile, he chuckled as Kaili interrupted him, telling him that she didn't give a damn what he was doing out there...ordering him to leave. Now that, he wouldn't be doing. Because, lucky for him, he didn't take orders from her.

"Nope. You know it doesn't work like that, babe." He growled, sticking the long machete into the studded belt he wore, his jeans riding low enough to see the v lines that he'd worked out for an hour just to intensify. Arrow to the sparrow...fuck yeah. "I don't take orders from you..." Smiling again, he pulled on his belt loops and bit his lip, giving her a tiny peep show of the man she COULD'VE been with in the dark of the trails.

"Well, who do we have here?" He asked, walking closer to her as he looked over her head, his eyes connecting to the haole behind her. Hiding behind a girl? Very manly of him. That took big balls, huh. "Well! If it isn't the famous Judy."

Kaili - 13-10-2011 at 12:00 PM

Fantastic. All night long Kaili had been hoping that Nui would come along and...no. She couldn’t even be sarcastic, a feeling of complete annoyance coming over her, threatening to spill into anger. Ugh! Why was he even out here? There were a hundred other places he could patrol right now. A hundred other places! Hell! She was here now; she would gladly walk the fucking trails for him if it meant that Nui would leave she and Jude alone. Ha. Her father would be absolutely furious to learn that Kaili had done...well anything Pueo related. He could hear him ranting now, ‘It is not the place of a Moku woman to walk the grounds at night’, blah, blah, blah...but that was neither here nor there. She wouldn’t suggest taking his patrol, but she would ask him to leave it. He had to have some girl waiting for him somewhere, didn’t he? Some poor unsuspecting girl that either didn’t know or didn’t care that he was a total dog.

But of course he wasn’t leaving. Maybe if she had been with Ailani out here, or even some other Mokukeiki boy, but not with Jude. Nui had taken the time to tell her just how he felt about Jude on more than one occasion; usually hitting on her at the same time. Ugh! God. She really wanted Jude to see the Shore from the plateau, but it would end up waiting for another night. She could not stay on this rock with the likes of Nui Kinalu! So if she couldn’t get him to leave, she was more than willing to go herself...With her luck though she and Jude would run into Keahi wherever they went next. By the Gods, she could at least be glad that it hadn’t been Keahi that found she and Jude together like they were. He easily would have pushed Jude off the side of Nui Mu without any questions.

I don’t take orders from you... It was the sentence that snapped Kaili out of her thoughts, her lips drawing to a tight line as she stared Nui down, her eyes trailing the length of his body as she debated hitting him. Okay, maybe he had a point, and she couldn’t actually order him to do anything that had to do with his Pueo duty. And she hadn’t...yet. She was trying to be nice, hoping he would be a human being and just take her request at face value. But no. He chose to make things difficult...He wouldn’t be Nui if he didn’t. His attention left her, falling to Jude as he drew closer, pretty much trapping Kaili between them as he stared Jude down in challenge. Ew.

“Back off, Kinalu-,” her tone was one of warning as her hand roughly pushed at his bare chest, “There’s no one in this area but us. You can keep moving now.” Maybe if his job was done he’d have no reason to stay...Or he’d just make one up.

Nui - 13-10-2011 at 02:09 PM

Just from the look in her eyes, Nui could tell one thing. And it had nothing to do with her pretty boy Haole. Kaili couldn't get enough of him. Nui saw the way her eyes had trailed his shirtless chest. He watched her take a walk on his pleasure trail...right into his pants. She wanted it. God, would she ever drop the fucking act? The one where she played like there was nothing about Nui that she could stand or tolerate? Please. Nui knew the truth . Behind all that hate was a shitload of love. And obsession. And she just couldn't 'fess up to it. But that was okay, because he knew the truth more than she did. He'd keep playing her game as long as she wanted to keep it up. And one day, she'd figure out that all the sniping at him was just prolonging the inevitable and Nui was sure that the Gods would give him exactly what he wanted in due time. Even Keahi wanted them...together. Yeah, his best friend knew about the reputation Nui carried, one that he very nearly matched. But he still knew that out of anyone on the island, Nui could take care of his sister. He could. He was all man...not partial PANSY ass like this fucking, long haired...PUSSY Kaili was deciding to waste her time with.

And what did the pussy do when challenged? Absolutely nothing. Go fucking figure. Was Nui surprised? Of course not. He was a haole. They were spineless. Completely worthless. Their blood was diluted with fear and that shit that ran through their veins was nothing when they were face to face with an Akame. That was why Judy wasn't making moves. That was why he was weak and that was why he didn't deserve Kaili. He didn't deserve to touch any part of her. Yet he had had his fucking hands on her...probably in ways that Nui didn't even know about...that Keahi didn't know about and that shit was even worse. As Nui stared in those eyes that refused to look away from his and ignored Kaili's warning, he second guessed himself. Nah, the fucker couldn't have touched Kaili anymore than he had done that night, his unworthy hands...pulling at her hips the way they had. Sourly, Nui's mouth shifted at the memory of what he'd seen.

"No, I think I'll be staying." He spoke, his voice overwhelming the sound of Kaili's irritation, growing into anger. Fuck her anger. If she'd just been there with him, letting him hold her the way that that prick had been, she'd be having the perfect night. Mostly because Nui...would follow through. He would've done her lips ten times more justice...both sets of them.

"Because obviously...no one's keeping an eye on you tonight." His eyes moved back to Kaili's, looking down at her as he disregarded her bitch ass boyfriend's presence. His gaze grew serious. He wanted her to see how pissed he was with the dumb shit she was pulling that night. "Keahi know you're here?" His voice growled menacingly, letting her know that he knew she shouldn't have been anywhere near the trails with this fuck. "From what he told me...you were supposed to be at some dance tonight."

Kaili - 13-10-2011 at 04:28 PM

AS FUCKING IF! Oh, if she could have heard his thoughts! Kaili wanted nothing to do with Nui Kinalu! She made it clear to him almost daily that they were not a couple and they would never be a couple! She didn’t want Nui and she couldn’t piece together why any girl would. Sure, fine, okay...she couldn’t deny that he was cute...a little. But his attitude made him completely undatable. She would never give Nui any time as a boyfriend. Hell they were barely friends with the way he acted most of the time. Like now, his face in a permanent scowl as he sneered at Jude. By the Gods, she would never understand how he could be so rude to someone he barely knew. Actually, someone he didn’t know at all. She’d met him the one time on the beach and drawn all the conclusions he needed there. Ugh! She knew why he hated him. It was obvious. Jude was competition.

And Nui was jealous...which was absolutely crazy considering they were not a fucking couple! She and Jude on the other hand...they could be. This night only solidified that idea to her. She had been unsure at the start of it, remembering how awkward it was when he asked her to homecoming , but now...things were different. Just the thought of maybe having a relationship with Jude Kane was enough to bring a smile to her face...Or it would have been if Nui wasn’t still talking. Heaving a sigh of aggravation that was quickly boiling into rage, she listened to him speak. His word only doing more to push her buttons.

“Actually, Jude is doing a very good job keeping an eye on me-,” her lips lifted in a smirk as she tried to push the idea that...well, that they had done a lot more than what Nui had just caught them doing. Of course that was completely false but, Nui didn’t have to know that and it seemed to piss him off. She smiled, watching his face change as he wondered what was true and what was not. Ha. Her smile was short lived though, fading as he ignored what she’d said and asked the question that irked her nerves the most. Keahi know you’re here?

“First of all Nui, you and my brother need not discuss the things that I choose to do with my life-,” she drew slowly closer to him as her words continued, her anger apparent, “Secondly, Keahi is just that. My brother. He is not my father and my every move is not his business and it is certainly none of yours.” She stood inches from him, her chest rising and falling as she held back the urge to slap him. HARD. She was over this whole thing and if Nui wasn’t willing to leave, then she was.

Jude - 14-10-2011 at 10:27 AM

Where...had he come from? No seriously, where the hell had Nui even emerged from (excluding the very pits of hell, which he probably called home)? Jude couldn't keep the look of surprise from showing on his face when he turned around, pushing Kaili, gently from him and ending their...uh, moment. Was that what it was? Because honestly, Jude had no clue what to call it or what any of this meant for them. But he only had a second to stand there and debate what their kiss meant before an unmistakable thickness hit the air around them, Jude's eyes narrowing as he watched Nui tap his long, and probably pretty sharp, machete against his leg. Intimidation? Really? They hadn't even been there a second and already, Nui was displaying his balls. Jude didn't know him very well, but if there was one thing he could figure out about Nui, the guy liked to be the biggest ego in the room...or a fifty mile radius. Any threat to that and the douche came out. But something told Jude that the douche...probably never left. Maybe it was Kaili's reaction to him, immediately stepping in front of Jude, her words cutting like a knife.

"Kaili..." Calling her name, his mouth readied his objection to even entertaining someone like Nui. Guys like Nui weren't something that you found on the Shore. They were all over, especially at AJW. Ego-maniacal meatheads with too much pride in their power and not enough in their pants, which was why they made everyone else's life absolute hell. Jude hated guys like him, so ready to prove themselves that they acted like idiots in the process. And this guy was King Idiot. Watching him mouth off to Kaili, calling Jude "Judy" in the process was more than Jude had wanted to do that night. Emphasis on being called Judy. But he stood quietly, watching the entire thing going down...feeling like an outsider even more than he had before. Taking orders? What were they talking about? Kaili's order sounded more like an annoyed dismissal. Nothing more. Or was it?

With a look of confusion, Jude listened on as their coded conversation stopped, coming and going so quickly that Jude wasn't even sure it had happened. What stayed was the anger. Kaili's anger which was welling up and turning into fury by the second. Was it that serious for this guy to keep goading her? Nui's face wore a satisfied smile as she insulted him, his comebacks making Kaili even more furious. And Jude just...stood there...like a fly on the wall. Or more like a foreigner on the Shore. Nothing that he had to say was of any consequence. He had no say. And if he even thought about telling Nui to back off or fuck off, the situation would escalate even more than it already had. And the LAST thing he needed was a call to Detective Kāne because his NEPHEW was in a brawl with a guy whose neck is as big as a...Christmas ham. No thanks...

"Really Kaili...let's just go." But Jude wasn't even sure that she'd heard his words, her face only inches away from Nui's. Shit Without thinking, Jude stepped forward, his hand grabbing Kaili's arm and pulling her, gently back towards him.

Kaili - 14-10-2011 at 06:40 PM

She was PISSED. Pissed beyond any point she had ever been with Nui before. Half of her wanted to take Jude’s hand and storm off. The other half, the half keeping her here, wanted to take the machete off his him and slice his fucking neck open! This was supposed to be perfect...Her first kiss was supposed to be like something out of a movie and for the most part, it had been. They were together, under the stars, and even though the first attempt had been kind of...off, it was adorably so. And then Jude more than made up for it with the second try, his lips pressing to her for just a second before NUI FUCKING RUINED EVERYTHING. Kaili wasn’t at all finished with that kiss and it didn’t seem that Jude was either, but Nui, as always, had to be the one calling the shots. And if he didn’t want Kaili and Jude together, he was going to do everything in his power to control the situation...Well not tonight.

She could feel her shoulders rise and fall as she stared him down, edging closer and closer to wiping the smirk off his face herself. Really Kaili...Let’s just go. She watched Nui wince in anger at the sound of his voice and she made her decision. Go. Yeah. That sounded great. There were plenty of other places on the Shore that weren't being patrolled by Nui and it’d much much easier to find one than to stand here and argue with Nui over...well, over nothing. Her features grew softer as Jude’s hand met her arm, pulling her body gently to his.

“Let’s-,” she responded, her eyes still staring dead at Nui as her hand found Jude’s before she turned her back on this entire situation. She was done with the drama, done with Nui, and for tonight, she was done with the trails. She and Jude could come back another night and try again. For now...for now they could find another place to be alone.

Nui - 15-10-2011 at 03:33 PM

The hot, red anger that surged from Kaili's eyes connected with Nui...and he nearly laughed, out loud, at it. She was so fucking sexy when she was angry at him. And her being angry at him happened more often then it didn't...like all the time. That was okay though because those steely glances that she gave him, the sneers of dislike and the snotty, bitchy comebacks just made Nui ten times hotter on her. And it let him know, beyond a shadow of doubt, that she was just as into him. How could she not be? There wasn't a chick ON the Shore that didn't want a piece of him. The girls that went to Kahealani, their older sisters...and even some of the teachers at the school had had a taste of Nui. Yeah, he liked to spread the love. And ten out of ten agreed. Nui Kinalu was the fucking shit. So, what couldn't Kaili? Why couldn't she just drop the shit that she was still giving him and just admit it. She wanted him as much as he wanted her. And Nui didn't want anything that he couldn't have. That meant that she wasn't an exception to that fact. He'd have her...just like he'd had her friend that had been just a stand in for the real thing. Crap lay and tits that were twice her age...in a bad way. But it'd apparently struck a cord as she and Kaili had fallen out as soon as she caught wind of her friend's indiscretion. Guess Kaili wasn't too hot on one of her friends testing the goods before she had. But she didn't have to worry...she'd get her chance soon.

"So you gonna stand there and stare holes into me or are you gonna tell me what you're doing here with Judy? Girl's night out running a bit late, you think?" Nui's eyes floated to Kaili's heaving chest as she took steps closer to him...close enough for him to catch the scent she wore that night wafting off of her skin that was just itching to be touched. With another chuckle, he bit his lip, just waiting for the next step closer to him. Gah, her fucking games. They were driving him crazy! Bringing this pansy bitch to the Shore, just to make him jealous. Giving him attitude when all he wanted was for her to get over herself and give him a chance. By the fucking Gods. All she had to do was give him the word and he'd punch the shit out of her little bitch boy, pick her up and ram the...

"No one fucking asked you to speak..." He growled at Jude as he told Kaili that they should just leave. Leave. Leave? They weren't leaving until Nui was done with them and he wouldn't be done until Kaili left with HIM! But that wasn't on Kaili's agenda. No, apparently she wanted wiener instead of beef that night as she turned her back on Nui, preparing to leave...her hand holding Jude's as they made to walk away.

"You're actually leaving with this FUCKING haole?!" Teeth bared, he walked after them, his lips close to Kaili's ear as he caught up to her, his body pressed behind her as he spoke. "You're signing his death wish. You know that? When Keahi finds out that he touched you...he's a dead man."

Kaili - 15-10-2011 at 04:26 PM

He was such a fucking DICK. He always did shit like this when he saw Kaili with a boy. She was never with them for a reason that wasn’t completely innocent, Keahi made sure of that, but no matter the reason Nui couldn’t stand Kaili being in the presence of a man that wasn’t him. With the boys at Kahealani, things were different, he could simply look at them and she’d lose her study partner; with Jude...he had no power. Jude didn’t seem to be phased by his macho bullshit and since he couldn’t get a rise out of Jude, he was settling for bringing every bit of fury out of Kaili. Could he please just leave the two of them alone? Was that entirely too much to ask?...Apparently, because he was still coming at her, his mouth opening to spew more shit about Jude.

“Ha. I may not give you orders Kinalu, but I sure as hell don’t have to answer to you-,” Her eyes stayed connected to his as she felt her anger continue to bubble over, “And if you call Jude out of his name again, I swear to Kanaloa*, himself, that I will put you down right here.” A tall order. She knew she couldn’t take him in a fight, but she was on edge enough to try, his goading only making things worse. Especially as Jude spoke, suggesting that they leave. Nui snapped at him, his true temper beginning to flare as Kaili set herself firmly between the two boys. They would not fight tonight. If anyone got to hit Nui it was going to be her!

But there would be no need. She and Jude could simply walk away and completely forget that this ass even existed. That sounded like the perfect plan to her and seemingly to Jude...Not so much to Nui. He yelled after them, his voice eliciting an aggravated groan from Kaili as he caught up to the two of them, his body lingering a little too close for comfort as his voice slipped into her ear, his words that of warning. He had to be fucking kidding. Her steps stopped as she turned around to push him off of her.

“Dammit Nui, okay! I get it! When Keahi finds out we’re in trouble; I don’t care!” She sighed again, this argument becoming exhausting. She was not afraid of her brother, Keahi was not judge, jury, and executioner to her. That was Nui’s place. “In fact, why don’t you FUCK OFF...find him and tell him?” She smiled sarcastically, turning back around and tapping Jude so that they could start off back down the trail.

Nui - 16-10-2011 at 09:01 AM

Kaili would do what? Put him down? Was she fucking bat shit? The thought, alone, that Kaili could do anything to Nui, outside of chewing him out, was laughable. Matter of fact, it was fucking hilarious. And if Nui hadn't been so disgusted at the fact that she threatened him on behalf of Jude, he would've laughed out loud at her threat. Her, take him down? Right. Nui, as well as every other Akame male, was built for battle. Tall builds and brawn, they were the first chosen of the Moku to defend the land of their ancestors, in time of battle and in duty to the Pueo. Nui, just like the other men of his tribe, had been trained for combat from the moment he could hold a ko'oko'o pokole, staff length. Kaili didn't have a fucking chance against him, even when he didn't raise his hand to fight her. But Nui didn't deny her threat and he wasn't amused with it either. Keahi would've gone on a fucking rampage if he'd heard his sister, his only sister, defend that goddamned haole like he was one of their own...even going as far as to challenge an Akame twice her size. She had to be crazy. She'd always been insane to keep up denying him, but this was ridiculous. That stupid foreigner was making her lose her damn mind. It was a good thing that Nui wouldn't mind helping her find it after all of this stupid shit was over.

"Babe...I'd let you put me down...anyday." With a smirk, he rolled his eyes as she continued to act like a little bitch! Was it that serious?! Was this stupid outsider that serious to her? WHY!? He was just some stupid, quiet weirdo with his stupid hair and his stupid bike and his...FUCK HIM! He didn't deserve her. And by all rights, Nui did! He was her brother's best friend, for fuck's sake. He was the motherfucking guy out every night, by her brother's side, under her father's instruction, defending HER HOME. And she wanted this fucker? No way. No fucking way and not over Nui's dead body would Jude EVER have her in a way that Nui wasn't allowed to.

The fact that she even had the nerve to disrespect Nui in front of Jude was enough. But the fact that she wanted to disrespect her brother now? Moving back an inch as Kaili's hands shoved at his chest, he swatted at her shoving, grabbing her wrist and pulling her back towards him. He stared at her as she mouthed off to him, feeling anger well up in him that was dangerous but totally correct. She was on dangerous ground, talking to him like that. HIM. Nui. Usually Kaili's words cute like a dull knife, never quite doing the job that they were intended to do. But that night, they were so much more...real. Maybe it was because he'd seen her kiss Jude...seen her hold his hand. And he'd see the fury flash in her eyes the second Nui threatened him. She fucking liked the fucker and there was nothing that he could do about it.

"You. Need to watch your mouth." Nui held her against her struggling without much effort, watching her in her pointless attempt to pull away from him. No, she was going to hear him. She'd hear him good. "Because you should care what Keahi thinks about you and him...together. You know what happens to outsiders who step over their boundaries." With that, he let her go, stepping back from she and Jude, his eyes dangerous and wild...and visible in the dark night.

Kaili - 16-10-2011 at 01:02 PM

Okay, so maybe she wouldn’t exactly put him down per say. Nui was like eighty times her size and she had no desire to even go there with him. Sure, she hated him a vast majority of the time, but...Nui was the brother she never wanted. He and Keahi had been best friends since they were in diapers and Kaili had grown up with him too. He was more than just a tribesman, he was pretty much family...which was the only reason she took his shit half the time. Tonight, she wasn’t for it though. She was fucking over him and his disrespect that would have gotten any other member of the Pueo all but killed. She was fucking Akame dammit! Apparently Nui had forgotten that that was his tribal name, not his last. She’d be sure to remind him. And it seemed that time would come sooner rather than later. Nui’s hand caught her wrist, pulling her body back to his soon after she had pushed him back. She continued to yell, telling exactly how little she cared that Keahi knew she was with Jude.

It was stupid that he could even hold that over her. With all the “little sisters” that Nui and Keahi had gone through? It was disgusting and completely hypocritical of them to covet Kaili’s purity while they pretty much preyed on everyone else’s. Of course, Nui wasn’t interested in maintain her purity. If Kaili were to ever go for it and if he knew he could get away with it, Nui would have her on her back faster than she could say yes. That’s why he was upset now. He saw the way she looked at Jude, the was she stood up for him...the way they kissed. He hated it, because he knew he could never have her...Not the way Jude did now. It was killing him, so he was acting out...but it was getting old.

As she felt his grip tighten on her arm, he spoke, telling her to watch her mouth. She pulled against his grasp to no avail as he kept speaking. You know what happens to outsiders who step over their boundaries... ENOUGH. That was the second time he’d threatened Jude’s life and now she had reached her breaking point. As he pulled away her features became rigid, her demeanor calming as she stepped back from him. She had dealt with his bullshit for quite long enough and she would be damned if she let Nui Kinalu ruin her night.

“Nui, I am not sure if you have forgotten, but allow me to remind you-,” Her eyes met his and locked. His held a wild kind of anger, but hers were...calm...warning. “If you ever put your hands on me the way you just did again, I will see to it that Alemana; not Keahi, but Alemana Akame removes them...personally. You know better than anyone the laws of my blood and you also know the measure of my father’s mercy when it comes to discipline.” It was no secret that Alemana did not pull punches or take lightly any form of insubordination. Especially when it came to the bloodline...his family. Some said he was perhaps too harsh, but his orders were never questioned and his reasoning never faulted. Nui was completely out of line and if the threat of her father was all that he would listen to...there it was.

“Jude and I are leaving. I suggest you stay in the area you were ordered and finish your patrol.”

Jude - 16-10-2011 at 04:52 PM

Why wasn't this pompous jerk just letting them go? Even after he'd heard Kaili dismiss him, he wasn't taking the hint. It was kind of...sad, even if Jude didn't entirely understand why Nui felt so freaking inclined to make their evening hell. But that, he was. Nothing could've soured what had just happened between he and Kaili more. Eh, that wasn't entirely true. Maybe Jude could have. Maybe after that kiss, Jude could've done or said something to reveal what was really on his mind. And that was complete confusion. He didn't know what he was doing when he'd kissed Kaili. He knew why he was doing it, though. Because...he...was grateful for her. He appreciated everything that she'd done for him. Even when her brother and his completely shitheaded friends made her life hell about it, she never hesitated to take him around the Shore; show Jude the things that his Uncle had never taken the time to even TALK about. He liked her "light". How she illuminated everything around them when she spoke about her people and told Jude the 'lore of her ancestors. Her light was warm, inviting. And it made Jude wonder why she even wasted her seconds with him. He...was...competely grateful. And that was why it wasn't hard to hold onto her, touch her...kiss her. But Jude saw the other side of her...the side that existed on the Shore. He saw the things that he didn’t, wouldn’t understand and even though he was learning more and more about her everyday, he realized that this was something that he would never fully understand. Even now, he didn’t belong, Kaili staying in front of him like his protector when it should’ve been the other way around. But he couldn’t protect her. No way he could. Nui would’ve beat him to death. Even he knew that. He was mad enough...and Kaili had turned around on him again, not doing much about quelling his anger.

“Kaili...come on...” He said quietly, tugging on the hand that had slipped inside of his, his fingers intertwining with hers, pulling against the curious strength that he’d seen the day in the gym. She was so strong, so hell bent on putting her fist through Nui’s face if she could. And she wasn’t budging from the place where she stood. And Nui hadn’t backed away either and nor had the intensity that was flowing between them. Jude almost didn’t regret not being between the two, as he could feel the hate flowing, even from the outside looking in. From the outside looking in. Where he’d been the entire situation. Even though his world was open to the Moku and the Shore, that didn’t mean it was open to him. He saw that now. His only link to it was Kaili...

Letting his hand go, Kaili turned completely to Nui, Jude’s eyes seeing Nui’s hand holding tightly to her wrist. “Hey! Let her go. C’mon dude.” He couldn’t touch her like that! Like he owned her or he controled the shit that she did. Again, Jude couldn’t figure out why he just wouldn’t let her go, let them go. He didn’t have any control over the situation and he didn’t have any control over Kaili. No matter how much he probably wanted to. Moving towards them again, Jude held Kaili’s waist lightly, pulling her away as much as he could as Nui kept talking, threatening her with her brother. Threatening him...

And then it happened, Kaili stopped struggling and shrugged Jude off of her...a stillness setting through her body just as it had when they were on the beach and just as it had when they were in the gym. Her body tensed, her chest swelled, her chin rose. And Jude knew exactly what was coming. Her dominance. And though the anger inside of Nui was crazy, irrational, Kaili was nothing BUT rational. Together. She spoke, her voice never waivering. Completely powerful and...threatening. And again, Jude understood barely anything that was happening. The only thing he knew was that she had threatened him with her father and that was big shit, apparently as Nui’s body deflated and the wild look in his eyes subsided, a grimace settling on his face as he looked down at the dirt beneath his feet. And slowly., he backed up a couple of steps, his eyes refusing to look up. Jude had fallen silent, his eyes looking from Nui to Kaili, hoping one of them would give him his cue. What to do next. Because he was lost. Lost in what Kaili had said to Nui to get him to return to his damn senses, if he had them. Lost as to what Kaili meant by “patrol” and lost as to why anyone would have to “patrol” the Shore, anyway. Just lost.

Finally, he heard Kaili’s voice, telling Nui to stay where he was and that they were leaving. He was ready to go, ready to get out of Nui’s presence and ready to stop feeling like he was the only one of the Shore that had no idea what the hell was going on.

ENOUGH.

Enough with this argument. Enough with his come ons. Enough with his blatant disrespect for Kaili and for Jude. Just enough...Nui had spoken enough for the night and if he wanted to tell on her for being here with Jude he could do so. What he wouldn’t do was threaten her with it for a moment longer. She had been nice...for the most part, up until now and still Nui had been an asshole about the entire thing. She got it. He was jealous. Kaili wanted Jude despite what she was sure were Nui’s best efforts. She might have felt bad if his best efforts included something other than trying to make her feel like he was entitled to her. He wasn’t, for the record. He was behaving like a spoiled child and she would no longer stand for it. If he wanted to be a kid about things, she would treat him like one...Or at the very least remind him of his place in the tribe. She may not have had any real power, but damn it until her last name was someone else’s he would respect the blood that had been spilled by her ancestors. The same blood that now pulsed through her veins with a slowly quieting rage. She was calmer now...calm because she knew this was the real end to their discussion.

Whatever Nui’s issue was, the one person she knew he would not take it up with was Alemana. There was a reason he only threatened to tell Keahi about Kaili’s indiscretions and not her father. Keahi was his friend; he could be candid with him, talk about anything. Alemana was not. Sure, Nui was able to speak to him, just like anyone else; hell, Nui was at the house more than any other member of the tribe anyway. He could tell Alemana whatever he wanted whenever he wanted...but if it became obvious exactly what Nui’s intentions were in being with Kaili, he knew as well as she did what would happen. And he didn’t want that.

So yes, as Kaili spoke, Nui’s demeanor softened, his eyes finding the laces of his boots as his face set into a defeated grimace. He was pouting because he couldn’t have his way and Kaili could not bring herself to feel for him. He’d known what was coming, it was only a matter of time before she grew tired of him and his comments abut her...company. Gosh. Jude. Things were...complicated now. She didn’t want them to be but they were. Were they a couple now? Friends that...kissed every now and again? Did any of what had happened between them even matter? She couldn’t very well ask those things in front of Nui, so she attempted to make another exit. One she was sure wouldn’t be interrupted this time. Taking Jude’s hand again, her fingers fell into the spaces between his and began back down the train. Nui didn’t follow and when Kaili was sure the two of them were out of earshot she spoke.

“I um...I’m sorry about him, Jude. It’s uh...” Yeah. She had nothing. What could she really say about what had just happened? Nothing. And in all honesty, she wasn’t interested in talking about that part of their night. What had happened right before it was more on her mind than anything else. Where was his head at in this whole thing?

Jude - 19-10-2011 at 10:40 AM

Complicated? Kaili didn't finish her sentence, but Jude was almost positive that those would've been the next words out of her mouth. Completely, unmistakeably complicated. That entire...thing that had just played out in his head, that he was still stretching his mind to even understand, was beyond his reasoning. Sure, it was almost as simple as Nui being an asshole and completely protective over his best friend's little sister, but something told Jude that it wasn't that simple. Nothing was that simple and he almost kicked himself for thinking so. The Shore was just some stretch of land with stories and folklore and he was stupid for even believing that for the time that he had. Not that any of what had just happened made the Shore...bad. No, not in any way. It was just that...he had believed, so hard, that life was different there. That the people were nothing like the ones that he was forced to live with, forced to be like. Things weren't so different. He saw that now. For starters, they had fucking douchebags, too. Nui had proved that loud and clear. And then...there were rules on the Shore. Secrets. Things that Jude had NO idea about. Things that didn't include him and made him feel like...well, like a loner. And that was a scary thought. Because it meant that on the Shore or off...he just didn't...belong. But the other side didn't have...Kaili. More and more, he was starting to see that she was that...one good thing, he guessed. The one thing that made totally defying Mauli...and guys with necks as big as thighs, like Nui.

"Hey, don't apologize for him. It's not your fault." Feeling Kaili's fingers fall in between his, her palm pressed against his, he looked at her, mustering a smile out of all of the confusion that Nui's presence had brought. Just like that, everything kind of...changed for Jude. It wasn't Nui's attitude that did it. No, that was his fucking deal. He wanted to be a douche and a half, so that's what he did. Arguing with Kaili over her presence with another guy besides him. What was even up with that? Unless...did Kaili spend time with him too? No. Hell no. Jude couldn't even see someone like Kaili even taking the time to breathe around someone like Nui. But what if...she didn't want to be around him , but she had to? Were there even laws like that? And that was what bothered Jude about that whole argument between Kaili and Nui. It wasn't really the things they were saying, it was the things they weren't saying. The things that, because of their life on the Shore, they knew about...and Jude didn't. How many more things were there about the people that were just like him that he didn't know? That he probably would never know? And why didn't Kaili tell him about them...

"I-I don't want you to get the wrong idea when I say this but..." Jude pulled around, gently to face him, his hand dropping hers as soon as she was looking into his eyes. "Is it okay for you to...be with me. Here?" He probably should've asked that question while they were trekking to the top of the the trails, not now. Not when they'd already been spotted by Nui. And not when...shit. Not when he'd kissed her and Nui had seen. Shit. That was probably bad. That was probably really bad. What if Nui wasn't completely crazy and Jude had no right even...touching her the way that he had. His hands...on her hips. And holding her hand. What if he was completely out of line? He should've thought about things like this...before he forgot about everything and kissed her.

"You...would tell me right? If there were things I needed to know so that I didn't piss or your dad or something...right?" Piss off her dad? Try pissing off her entire tribe...

Kaili - 21-10-2011 at 06:46 PM

Complicated...sure. Complicated was a good word for it. There were things Jude couldn’t and wouldn’t know about some of the things that Kaili had just said to Jude and trying to explain them here wouldn’t do them any justice anyway. Not to mention, her desire to explain anything was non-existent at the moment. She was more interested in what Jude thought of what they had done before the fight with Nui had begun. Were the two of them...together now? Kaili had never been in a real relationship with anyone. Sure, she had guy friends that she kind of hung out with, but never like Jude. She had never been alone with a boy, certainly not at night, and certainly not with...an outsider. As much as she hated it, that was what Jude was. He wasn’t from home; he hadn’t grown up here and that made things...complicated. More complicated than he could wrap his head around. Sometimes more complicated than even she knew. She still didn’t understand her father’s interest in Jude, but she continued to let the part of her that wanted to be with Jude overpower the part of her that wanted to know why that was okay. The Shore was known for its...tolerance for outsiders, but Alemana had always held a special distaste for them. Kaili had never known why and she had never bothered to ask, but now the question came to her again and again, more often than not.

Again Jude told her that her apology was unnecessary. But she felt like it was. She was sorry about Nui, sorry for him being harassed every time he came here, sorry everything was so...complicated. She moved to tell him that. That even though it wasn’t ‘her fault’...she was responsible. But he spoke first his words careful as he came to stand in front of her. The wrong idea? What could that mean? The wrong idea about what? His hand fell away from hers as she looked to him, her confusion apparent. Is it okay for you to...be with me? She felt her heart flutter in her chest at the thought of what he might mean by that. Was he asking if they were...exclusive? No. He just meant here. Was it okay for her to be with him here.

“Jude, don’t listen to Nui-,” she sighed looking away from him ad her arms crossed over her chest, a new awkwardness falling over their conversation. “He’s...an asshole.” That wasn’t what she was going to say. She wanted to tell Jude Nui was wrong, but...he wasn’t. She and Jude weren’t supposed to be here together. She and Jude weren’t supposed to breathe the same air for more than five minutes at a time. He was an outsider, a stranger, a haloe...and she was the daughter of a tribal elder. Nothing about this was right, but...she wanted it to be. She liked Jude; she liked him a lot and even if they didn’t get into a serious relationship, she at least wanted his friendship. He wasn’t like other outsiders; he was different. The kind of different Kaili wanted to know better and Nui wasn’t going to stop that...And neither would her father. Why was Jude mentioning her father? If anyone should make him nervous, she would think it would be Keahi...but he was worried about what would piss off her father? No. No, no, no. Jude was different and he didn’t know anything about anything. He wasn’t like the guys in her tribe looking for a way to use her as an in. He didn’t know to use her as one...did he?

“Of course I would but...I don’t...understand. What exactly are you asking me to do, Jude? And what does my dad have to do with anything? Is this because of what I said to Nui? Because I only brought my dad up to him because I knew he wouldn’t try to test a run in with him-,” her words were coming fast and she was sure he didn’t understand anything she was asking, but that only made them even. What did her father have to do with the two of them?

Jude - 22-10-2011 at 08:12 AM

From the moment before Nui snuck up on them, emerging from the brush of the trails, to the moment that existed now, standing in front of Kaili with so much confusion in his face that he was sure she saw it too, Jude was lost. Lost as to what to think about anything that had just transpired between them. And lost, so much more lost than anything. Jude couldn't help but think that if it wasn't for Nui's arrival, would he have even thought some of the things that were running through his head. Thoughts about rules and laws of the land...and thoughts about what would happen had he broken them. What would he have been thinking if things had been different? Maybe the kiss. Maybe he would've been thinking about what was going to happen next with...them. Not what would happen to him...once Nui told Keahi...and much worse, her father. The word "them" was a laugh, really. Because inside, Jude knew that everything that Nui had said about the retaliations from him being an outsider and being with Kaili they way he had been were true. Uncomfortably true. There was no room to think of the things that could be with he and Kaili when he didn't even know if he'd live to find out if they actually could've been. Whether the kiss they'd shared would've gone beyond "awkward" and into...god knew what. Jude had never...done that before. He'd never done anything that even mimicked a...relationship. And, fuck his life, when he did...it was now...when there was a possibility that he just signed his own death certificate. He had a death wish. Obviously. Of all the girls that he could've...felt something for, liked...it had to be the most complicated one of all.

"I..." With a soft sigh and a less audible curse word leaving his lips, Jude put his hands on the top of his head, his fingers joining there, eyes closing at Kaili's question...more like stream of questions. Everything was so completely jumbled inside of his head, from the kiss to Nui, to the look on her father's face when he found out that Jude and Kaili had been alone on the trails. And was it too much to think that her father probably had a machete just as sharp and just as long as Nui's waiting for him? Dammit. He couldn't help but feel completely...guilty. Was that a feeling he was supposed to have after kissing someone? But he felt it, heavy in his chest, pressing down on it as he opened his eyes and looked at Kaili, standing there...and probably thinking he was completely crazy. It was just...that...he felt a sense of responsibility. Like Kaili's dad almost...trusted him. Even as an outsider. Even as someone who was so foreign that he shouldn't have even been two feet NEAR Kaili. Her dad must have trusted him. Trusted him to keep his fucking hands off of her and to just...listen and learn from her. But now, he'd get the message that Jude was doing just the opposite of what he probably expected. And there went the trust...and for some reason...it meant so much. So very much...

"I just...I don't know top from bottom here..." He confessed, dropping his arms and stuffing his hands in his pockets, once again. "I'm an outsider. And as much as this should be home to me...as much as I want it to be. I'm the one foreign thing here..." Trying to explain how he felt was almost like trying to speak the native tongue that he would probably never understand. He could barely understand his own feelings and here he was, trying to group them all together and just...lunging them at Kaili.

"I just don't want to do anything the wrong way. Coming here means too much to me..." Walking towards Kaili again, standing close to her, he looked down at her and hoped that she could see into him, see the feelings that his clumsy words wouldn't express. "Being able to see...you...it-that means too much to me."

Kaili - 31-10-2011 at 05:30 PM

This was not how things were supposed to be now. They’d kissed. Nothing about the politics of who she was or the rest of the tribe was supposed to matter! They should have been talking about them not anyone outside of them. Nui didn’t matter, her brother didn’t matter, her father...could probably be swayed...She and Jude could be together and she was all for that idea now that she knew for a fact that he was too. She wanted this! She could only imagine what being Jude Kane’s girlfriend would be like, but now she had the potential to find out. She had a chance to find out what having a boyfriend would be like, period...If only she could get him to focus on them, not...everything else! Ugh!

But she had to deal with this, now. Her brow furrowed a bit more as he sighed and she found herself wishing she could read his thoughts rather than just his emotions. The frustration and confusion and worry was written all over his face, but his lips would not utter specifics. What exactly was bothering him? He didn’t have to worry about her father. He had no reason to even bring him into this; even if he didn’t approve Alemana would never have to know, just like he knew nothing of the rival gym from last summer or Ailani’s Sweet 16...but those things were neither here nor there. The point was her father knew nothing about those incidents and there was no reason he had to know about the boy who could be her boyfriend.

I just don’t know top from bottom here...That was true enough. She hadn’t taken the time to explain much of anything to Jude and it wasn’t because she didn’t want to, it was because she couldn’t. There were so many reasons that ‘knowing top from bottom’ was off limits to him and they were the same reasons that the two of them was such a laughable idea to the rest of her tribe. There were things Jude would never know about her, no matter how much he gave of himself; things she was bound by her tribe to keep from him. They could never have a completely honest relationship and everyone else was willing to accept that...everyone but her.

Her features softened as his words continued and before he finished, her lips had settled into a small smile. Being able to see you means too much to me. She bit her bottom lip, looking away from his face for just a moment as she felt her face redden again. “I guarantee you-,” she began, pausing as her hand reached to cup his face, “You are doing everything the right way.” And he was. Perhaps she was selfish, but her bother and father’s happiness meant nothing to her at that very point in time. All that mattered was her happiness...and Jude made her happy.
