The Mokuke-what?

The Mokukeiki
The first children of the island

So, just what are the Mokukeiki?
The Mokukeiki (which is a total mouthful in itself), Moku for short, are the indigenous people of Kapuhai Reef. In other words, they are the people that were here first. Although their lineage has migrated across the entire island, their birthplace is in the heart of the South Shore.

What's so special about them?
Well, aside from being the original peoples of Kapuhai Reef and a bloodline that predates American history, the Mokukeiki are the founders of the very island that you are now either visiting or inhabit. Their ways and culture provide the basis of Kapuhai Reef dweller life. From the language to the food, the music to the art, everything is infused with their history.

Aside from their rich history and customs, the legend of this very island pertains to them and their ancestors.

The Legend?
Yes, the legend. Read up on the Legend of Kapuhai Reef.

What's this about tribal elders/leaders?
As previously stated, the Mokukeiki people were spread across the vast island, split into many tribes, with their own circle of leaders called tribal elders. These elders were the wisdom for each tribe, making decisions that would effect the entire tribe. These decisions involved safety, war, relocation, inter-tribal disputes, unions and religion, as the tribe's spiritual leader (often female) was also positioned as an elder. Tribes and tribal elders are still in existence today, although the tradition keeps very close to the South Shore.
